Differentiation is vital for brands to become memorable.
Like people, every brand has a unique set of goals, values, beliefs and personalities. And, like a memorable person, brands that are intriguing, confident and brave stand out from the crowd.
Brands with a clear strategy that know who they are, what they stand for and how to convey these concepts will always deliver a more authentic experience — one that resonates with the audience and that the audience will WANT to engage with.

Who we are.
I’m Trevor, the owner and chief designer at Octothorp. I started Octothorp as the culmination of my experience in the design industry over the past 20 years.
Having worked a broad range of careers in the design industry — whether that be as a freelance graphic designer, running a Web Design Agency, coordinating materials as a Marketing Director, launching Photography business and other startups, or leading the design process as a Creative Director — I realized I was able to offer unique insight and a broader perspective to clients.
I love working with people to build things from the ground up as well as updating visuals to give a brand a modern refresh. Want to learn more? Contact me or take a look at our portfolio.

We understand that the terminology associated with the branding process can be confusing. To combat this, we’ve provided a basic outline of the elements that go into branding design packages and provided insight as to our approach to logo design and branding.
What is a brand?
A brand is the perceived emotional corporate image as a whole. As Marty Neumeier, author of The Brand Gap put it, “A brand is a person’s gut feeling about a product, service or organization. It exists in the hearts and minds of individuals.“ Consumers emotionally connect with brands when they repeatedly provide something that the consumer wants, desires and needs.
What is branding?
Branding is a disciplined process involved in creating a unique name and identity for a product, company or service in the consumers’ mind. Hiring a designer helps you begin to form the foundation of your brand.
What is identity?
The identity is the image of your company. It encompasses all visual aspects that form part of the overall brand. The identity or ‘image’ of a company is made up of:
- A Logo (The symbol of the entire identity & brand)
Stationery (Letterhead, business card, envelopes, etc.)
Marketing Collateral (Flyers, brochures, books, websites, etc.) - Products & Packaging (Products sold & the packaging they come in)
- Apparel Design (Tangible clothing items worn by employees)
- Signage (Interior & exterior design)
- Messages & Actions (Conveyed via indirect or direct communication)
- Other Communication (Audio, smell, touch, etc.)
- Anything visual that represents the business.
What is a logo?
A logo is for identification. It is a symbol, mark or icon that represents your brand in its simplest form.
What makes a "good" logo?
We believe all great logos follow 3 guidelines:
1. Appropriate
2. Distinctive
3. Simple
A logo is made to identify not communicate. A logo doesn’t necessarily tell your customer who you are, but it does have to help them spot you in a crowd. This is why the large companies have simplistic logos (Apple, Netflix, Nike, etc), because they are easier to find and easier to remember.
What is brand strategy?
Brand strategy is a long-term plan for the development of a successful brand in order to achieve specific goals. A well-defined and executed brand strategy affects all aspects of a business and is directly connected to consumer needs, emotions, and competitive environments.
What is positioning?
Positioning is a strategy for a brand with the goal to create a unique impression in the minds of the customers and at the marketplace. Brand positioning has to be desirable, specific, clear, and distinctive in nature from the rest of the competitors in the market.
